Stringybark Creek

Tatong-Tolmie Road Benalla

Stringybark Creek reserve is located in Toombullup State Forest between Benalla and Mansfield.

It was here, in 1878, the Kelly Gang members became Australia's most wanted outlaws after Police Constables Lonigan, Scanlan and Kennedy were shot and killed.

From Benalla, take the road to Tatong and follow the sign to Tolmie. The road becomes gravel as you enter Toombullup State Forest. The Day Visitor Area is down Stringybark Creek Road.

Bushwalking

A short walking track meanders through the tall forest and leads you to key points of interest. This track requires basic experience and a low fitness level.

Facilities

The day visitor area provides picnic and wood bbq facilities. There is All Ability Access to the Kelly Tree viewing area from the carpark. The toilet in the carpark is an all ability facility.

Delve into history

Explore the full historical story of the site from the original custodians – the Taungurung, to the early settlers and land acquisition. The comprehensive signage located in the campground, day visitor area and along the walking track tells the story of Ned Kelly, his relationship with the area and the events leading up to the pivotal tragedy. See the Kelly Tree, which marks the spot where the gunfight between the Mansfield police and the Kelly Gang occurred.

You can also visit the grave of Emma Heller (1848 – 1889), located off Madhouse Road, not far from the Tatong-Tolmie Road. Emma Sophia Heller passed away during a severe winter in 1869. Read the interpretive signage to learn about her remarkable life as a 19th century immigrant and early settler.
